The 1990s brought Polish viewers countless hours of joy through Japanese anime series, known at that time as "Chinese cartoons." We have already written about some of them, like Yattaman, Tiger Mask, and Daimos. Article about a Japanese anime Yattodetaman (Calendar Men) from Time Bokan series, emitted on Polish TV channel Polonia 1 in the 90s.All these gems of Japanese animation from the 70s~80s, purchased on discounted licenses from an Italian distributor, were broadcast on the unique and unparalleled channel Polonia 1, a pioneer of Polish-Japanese relations, a capital of innovative programs like "Escape," and the only source in Poland for the category "October Shows." But more on that shortly.

Article about a Japanese anime Yattodetaman (Calendar Men) from Time Bokan series, emitted on Polish TV channel Polonia 1 in the 90s.One of the titles that particularly remained in the memory of many young fans, despite hundreds of hours of psychotherapy in adult life aimed at erasing this trauma from memory, was the series "October Shows." Oh, sorry, I meant the anime "In the Kingdom of the Calendar," known outside Poland as "Yattodetaman."

The Polish version, thanks to improvements and innovations, significantly surpassed the original Japanese version, mainly due to that specific charm we owed to the characteristic narrator, whose bass voice thundered over the shrill Italian dubbing.

Koszulki z Yattodetamana (Calendar Men / W królestwie kalendarza) z Polonii 1, T-Shirty bawełnianeThe anime "In the Kingdom of the Calendar" was distinguished not only by its colorful visual setting but also by its unique approach to the plot, where characters representing different months had their unique traits and roles. Hm… one would also like to write that this series was also characterized by a unique approach to logic. To reality. To humor. And certainly to knowledge. Because, after all, each of us gained knowledge about the world thanks to educational mini-episodes, so eagerly awaited in every episode, called "October Shows," right? No?

Let's find out, after 30 years, what it was really all about!

A bit of history

Article about a Japanese anime Yattodetaman (Calendar Men) from Time Bokan series, emitted on Polish TV channel Polonia 1 in the 90s.The creator of the "Time Bokan" series and many of its branches, including "Yattodetaman," is the Japanese animation studio Tatsunoko Production. Founded in 1962 by Tatsuo Yoshida along with his brothers Kenji and Toyoharu, Tatsunoko Production became famous for creating innovative and influential anime series that had a significant impact on the development of this art form in Japan and worldwide. "Time Bokan" became one of their flagship projects, known for its unique humor, dynamic action, and colorful characters, which often broke the fourth wall, speaking directly to the viewer.

Kenji, specializing in business management, and Toyoharu, who later took the pseudonym Ippei Kuri and focused on production and direction, together contributed to the development and innovation in the studio. Their collaboration brought a series of important titles, such as "Speed Racer," "Gatchaman," and "Time Bokan," which defined genres and set new standards for future anime productions.

Article about a Japanese anime Yattodetaman (Calendar Men) from Time Bokan series, emitted on Polish TV channel Polonia 1 in the 90s.Time Bokan distinguished itself from the very beginning with its unique approach to narration, combining elements of comedy, adventure, and science into one coherent whole. "Time Bokan" quickly gained popularity thanks to its humorous treatment of historical and fictional events, where the heroes traveled through time to explore different eras and cultures. The ingenuity in creating characters, unique vehicles and time machines, and characteristic graphic motifs made "Time Bokan" a cult series that initiated an entire franchise encompassing many different titles.

"Yattodetaman," which is one of the many continuations of the "Time Bokan" series, premiered in 1981 and quickly gained the status of one of the more distinctive titles in the entire franchise. This 52-episode series introduced a new set of heroes to the universe, including a trio of antagonists – September, October, and Princess Monday, as well as heroes – Beppe (Yattodetaman) and Tina. Here we see a clear reference to the earlier series – Yattaman, where a trio of antagonists (Miss Dronio with Boyakki and Tonzura) fought against two kids: Gan-chan and Ai-chan.

Koszulki z Yattodetamana (Calendar Men / W królestwie kalendarza) z Polonii 1, T-Shirty bawełniane"Yattodetaman" also stood out with a unique plot focused on the battle for control over the "kingdom of the calendar," a fantastic world where each month was represented by different characters, adding layers of allegory and symbolism to the series.

Regardless of the place in the timeline, the heroes consistently got involved in fun and action-packed adventures. This unique blend of humor, adventure, and science attracted fans in Japan and around the world, reinforcing "Yattodetaman's" position as an important element in the history of anime.

The name "Yattodetaman"

Full name: "タイムボカンシリーズ ヤットデタマン"

(Time Bokan Shirīzu Yattodetaman)

"Time Bokan Series: Yattodetaman"

Article about a Japanese anime Yattodetaman (Calendar Men) from Time Bokan series, emitted on Polish TV channel Polonia 1 in the 90s.The name "Yattodetaman" refers to a triumphant exclamation: "Yatta" in Japanese means "I did it!" or "It worked!", reflecting the optimistic tone of the series. "Detaman" can be seen as a playful distortion of the word "daiman," which implies "always" or "forever," suggesting an endless pursuit of adventure and victory. Together, "Yattodetaman" can be interpreted as a cry of joy and a constant striving for success, perfectly fitting the energetic and dynamic character of the series.

In Poland, the series was known as "In the Kingdom of the Calendar," which was a significant departure from the original title. It was not the first time this happened: Gigi La Trottola originally is Dash Kappei, also not very similar. This change was likely intended to provide an easier-to-remember title in the native language for a series that focuses on adventures in a fantastic kingdom where time and calendars play an important role. I assume that someone decided that while the name "Yattaman" might still be somewhat remembered by the kids of the 90s, "Yattodetaman," due to those two extra syllables, might prove too difficult for the young viewer to master.

And so "In the Kingdom of the Calendar" was born. I don't know, it's a pity, I would have preferred "Yattodetaman." Although no! I would have preferred it to be named: "October Shows"!
